Jorge Britto

Jorge Britto was born on December 13, 1979 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Growing up, Britto developed an interest in football and went on to represent America Football Club under futsal rules, briefly playing at a state level. At the age of 13, he shifted his interest towards jiu jitsu, a highly popular martial art in Rio de Janeiro at the time.Britto's first instructor was Fernando "Nutri-Baby" Silva, a black belt under Carlson Gracie, who taught him about competitiveness and aggressiveness on the mat. Silva promoted Britto to blue belt, and he started training at Gracie Tijuca, an affiliate of Gracie Humaitá. Britto made the Tijuca academy his home, spending most of his day on the mat and regarding his coaches as family. In 1997, Britto sponsored free kimono wash and dry at a local laundromat during the Gracie Humaitá World Championship camp in Tijuca to earn some cash. This caught the attention of Wellington Megaton Dias, who advised Britto to learn English and how to teach a class, stating that the future of jiu jitsu was abroad. Britto took this advice seriously, learned English, studied Physical Education, worked with jiu jitsu federations, and competed as often as possible, even venturing into mixed martial arts (MMA) to test his grappling skills.Britto's hard work was recognized by his coaches when he was promoted to black belt on February 12, 2005. Despite investing all his time towards bettering his chances of working abroad, his United States visa was denied three times. In 2007, he received a 30-day permit to compete at the IBJJF World Championship, but chose to return to Brazil to avoid becoming an illegal alien. Through a contact at Black House, the MMA team he was training with at the time, Britto was able to obtain a working visa in Canada in May 2008. He represented the Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu Academy and later formed his own association, Jiu-Jitsu For Life Team, in October 2016, which quickly established itself as a key player in the country through athletes such as Yacinda Nguyen and Darson Hemmings.

Jorge Britto is a 4th degree Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt. He is the founder of the Jiu Jitsu for Life team with Josh Rapport. Among other achievements he is the 2015 World Masters Champion, 2010 ADCC European Qualifier Champion and 2009 World No-GI Masters Absolute  Black Belt World Champion. He has studied with Helio Gracie, Saulo Ribeiro and Royler Gracie.
